Project Description

The Brief

Design and deliver a session for final year computing students completing an e-learning module.

What we did

We started by speaking to Cheryl, the module lecturer. We were interested to hear her ideas about how we could enhance the experience for her students. Her ideas were combined with our own to develop and deliver an engaging workshop session.

It started with a little show and tell. The students shared examples such as Code Academy and how to videos on YouTube. We shared some of our own favourite digital learning examples including Firestorm from The GuardianTake This Lollipop and a Google+ community which supports informal learning for employees at a large organisation.

These examples were used to introduce learning (or training) needs analysis. The analysis phase is something students have struggled with in the past so we focused on it. What is it? Why is it important? What are the outputs?

At the end of the session, we challenged students to compare HTML5 with Articulate Storyline. The students preferred building from scratch in HTML5 as it allows them to show off their coding skills. We think both options (and many others) are valid. What suits you, your organisation and your learners will be different to someone else and their situation.

E-learning 75%
Face-to-face training 95%
Content analysis 96%
HTML5 and rapid development 98%

The value

Our industry experience and real world examples provided a foundation for the theoretical knowledge they were taught in the following sessions. We’d also like to think we inspired some of the students’ own projects. From our perspective, the opportunity to meet tomorrow’s talent and shape their learning experience was fantastic. Thanks for working with us Sheffield Hallam University!
